A Level 1 is valid for three (3) years initially and may be extended thereafter for a period of one year at the request of a Louisiana employing authority. There are no other requirements to renew a Level 1. Level 1 certificates are limited to two (2) one-year extensions.
Level 2 and Level 3 certificates are valid for five (5) years initially and may be renewed thereafter for a period of five (5) years at the request of the Louisiana employing authority. To renew a Level 2 or Level 3 certificate, the educator must have earned effective evaluations in an approved setting for at least three (3) years during the most recent five (5) year validity period.
Requests for renewal are made using the Renewal or Higher Level Teaching Certificate application in the Louisiana Educator Portal (LEP).
A request for renewal of a Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 certificate must be verified and signed by the Louisiana employing school system. The application will be routed to the selected school system for employment verification and signature through LEP.
